Mr. Phillip “Pee Wee” Sylvester Jones, Jr., 80, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at his home. He was born March 31, 1928 in Davidson County to Mittie Cornish and Phillip Sylvester Jones. He was a member of First Christian Church of Clemmons and retired from Modern Chevrolet. Pee Wee was one of the original members of NASCAR beginning in 1949 until his retirement in 1972. He was a six-time ‘Modified’ Champion at Bowman Gray Stadium where his record of five consecutive championships still stands. He also won multiple championships at other race tracks. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Jones. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jones of the home; two sons, Tim Jones and wife Donna of Mooresville, Mike Jones and wife Tammie of Clemmons; and two special grandchildren, Austin Jones and Vidalia Smallwood. The Jones Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 27th from 6-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 28th at 2pm at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Stacy Abernathy officiating. Burial will follow at First Christian Church Cemetery in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice by going to www.hospicecarecenter.org.
