Mr. Alan John Scardina, 74, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He died at home with his family by his side. Al was born on September 11, 1944, in Sharon, PA, to Dominic and Mary Scardina. Al, affectionately referred to as “Big Al”, was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis Scardina; daughter, Lori Maughon and husband Matt of Advance; two sons, Michael Scardina and wife Debbie of Winston Salem, and John Scardina and wife Mandy of Albemarle; six grandchildren, Justin Maughon, Olivia “My O” Maughon, Nathan “Nate” Scardina, Christian Payne, Victoria Payne, and Jillian “Jilly-Bug” Scardina; one great-grandchild, Grayson Maughon; sister, Jean Rinehold of Bermuda Run; and nephew, Brett Rinehold and husband Matt of Seattle, WA. Al, a man of few words, lived his life with great love and pleasure. He and Phyllis met at Indiana State College in Indiana, PA, and raised their three children in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1984, they moved to Winston -Salem where Al began the Kitchen Center of Winston-Salem which is still in existence. Al enjoyed sports and music. He was active with baseball and bowling, but golf became his passion. His friend, Charlie Marshall, introduced him to the Bermuda Run golf course and he never looked back. After his family, it became the love of his life. He appreciated the game and the many friends he made. A memorial service with a reception following will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 3600 Harper Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012.
