Alva Howell Erickson, 90, of Advance, NC, passed away on Saturday, January 19, at her home. She was born on April 25, 1928, in Los Angeles, CA, but spent a portion of her early years in her mother's native country, Sweden. Alva and her late husband moved to Winston-Salem in the early sixties, where she lived for most of her adult life. Alva was an avid reader, gourmet cook, seamstress, former model, bird watcher, bridge player, Reiki practitioner, gardener, herb-grower, golfer, visual artist, pottery maker, and world traveler. She enjoyed hosting parties for friends and family, and was an optimistic, upbeat person with a lively intellect and a strong will. She was also a "plant whisperer," who could make anything grow. Alva loved bold, bright colors and was a gifted decorator. Every home she ever lived in paid tribute to her artistic vision, showcasing her many talents as well as collectibles from extensive travels. She was truly a one-of-a-kind person who is greatly loved and will be deeply missed. Preceded in death by her husband of many years, Folke Erickson, Alva is survived by sister Astrid Howell, of Göteborg, Sweden; her devoted and loving caretakers, daughter Jensina Burton (Wendell) of Advance; son Leonard Erickson (Terri) of Pfafftown; granddaughter Gia Myers, grandsons Alex Burton of Advance and Ian Burton (Katie) of Detroit, MI, and great-granddaughters Ellie and Ari. The family would like to extend special thanks to Trellis Supportive Care, and to Wendy and Brittany. Services will be held in Västerås, Sweden, at a later date.
