Mr. Alvah Payne Stafford, 103, passed away October 3, 2026, At the NC State Veterans Home in Kernersville. He was born in Guilford County on February 15, 1923, to the late Ivey O. Stafford and Sarah Pitts Stafford. He was a United States Army veteran who was in WWII From June 13, 1943 – December 9, 1945. He entered war at Utah Beach in France. He served during Germany’s capture and was on the front line until the war ended. When he returned home from the service, he married the love of his life, Pauline Brendle Stafford in 1946 of Oak Ridge. Where they built a home and lived there for the rest of their lives. He was the founding member of Oak Ridge Volunteer Fire Dept. Being a small community where there were no funds to cover anything, Mr. Stafford helped build the first fire truck in Oak Ridge. He retired from the Fire Dept. after 21 years of service as Fire Captain. He was employed by the United Stated Postal Service where he retired from in 1988.
In addition to his loving wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter Paulette Greeson, sister Colleen McQuiston and two brothers; Harley and Virgil Stafford.
Left to Cherish his memory are one daughter, Judy Lynn Crews (Bobby), one grandson James Hall (Jody), three grandchildren; Max, Alexis, and Aiden Hall.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Ridge United Methodist Church 2424 Oak Ridge Rd. Oak Ridge, NC 27103.
