Amos Sanford Clark, age 98, passed away August 13, 2016. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 20, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem.
Amos was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on September 18, 1917, to William Sanford and Ida Lu Richardson Clark, and was the second of their four sons (Roy, Clyde, and W.S. Clark). In 1937, he married Mabel Parker on his twentieth birthday, and they were together for 57 years until her death in 1995. Also in 1937, Amos joined the Mengel Box Company (later Container Corporation of America and Smurfit-Stone), where he worked for forty-two years, retiring as Plant Engineer. He was a founding member of the Winston-Salem Ham Radio Club and provided emergency communications through North Carolina during natural disasters. He could build, repair and operate any kind of electronic or mechanical equipment. He designed and built his home on Lynhaven Drive, where he and Mabel raised their family and grew a big garden every year, sharing irises, roses, corn, and tomatoes with many friends. They enjoyed their retirement years together, spending their time gardening, volunteering, and enjoying their grandchildren. Amos was active in the Master Gardener's program for many years. Several years after Mabel's death, Amos met Martha Styers, who became his sweetheart and faithful friend. He was a member of the Covenant Class at First Presbyterian Church, which, along with Martha, was a big source of fellowship and love during his last years.
During his long life, Amos suffered the loss of his parents, three brothers (Roy, Clyde, and W.S. Clark), his wife Mabel, two of his four children (Amos, Jr. and David Clark), a grandchild (David Clark, Jr.), and his sweetheart Martha Styers. He is survived by his daughter Suzanne Clark, son Steve Clark (wife Martha), daughter-in-laws Darla and Nancy Clark, and grandchildren Amos III (Sandy) Clark, Jeff Clark, Kenny Clark, Elizabeth Clark, Alex Boyd, Travis Boyd, and Nicholas Boyd. He had four great-grandchildren, Amos IV, Maighan, Fallon, and Noah Clark; and two great-great-grandchildren, Cooper Richardson and Amos Clark V.
