Anne Dowswell Patterson, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026, at the age of 90, with her two children by her side. Born on June 4, 1936, in Birmingham, Alabama, Anne’s life was a testament to love, resilience, and the cherished bonds of family and friendship.
Anne was the only daughter of Gerald Dowswell and Sarah Spikes, both of whom preceded her in death. Growing up in Birmingham, she attended Ensley High School and graduated in 1954. Her education became the foundation for a life filled with meaningful relationships and professional accomplishments. She dedicated her career to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where she worked diligently until her retirement. Her colleagues remember her as a dedicated and compassionate team member whose presence was both comforting and inspiring.
Anne had an innate ability to bring people together, often enjoying nights out with her wide circle of friends at local restaurants. Her vibrant personality and open heart made her a beloved figure in her community, and her friendships were a testament to her inclusive and loving nature.
Anne is survived by her children, Rona Patterson Vis (Maarten) and Russ Patterson (Debbie); grandchildren, Chandler Payne (Taylor), Cortland Voekel (Carter), Carly Vis (Nate), Tate Patterson (Austin), and Frazier Patterson; and great-grandchildren, Miller, Presley, Weston, and Bailey. Anne will also be deeply missed by her beloved brother, Don Dowswell (Barbara), of Birmingham, Alabama. Anne’s legacy of kindness and warmth will continue through the generations. Her memory will forever be a guiding light to those who were fortunate enough to know her. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the ICU doctors and nurses at Baptist Hospital for their compassionate care and support during Anne’s final days. In accordance with her wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Brookberry Farm Clubhouse (5567 Brookberry Farm Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106) to honor Anne and the love she shared with those around her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Fur-Ever Friends of North Carolina (https://fureverfriendsnc.org/donate-2/) in memory of Anne’s generous spirit and her lifelong love of animals. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the Patterson family.
