Our darling daddy, sweet papaw and beloved great-papaw has gone to his glory!
Many will remember him as quite the story teller and if you were fortunate to have met him, you will know exactly what I mean. He made storytelling an art, offering decades of embellished memories through passionate and colorful chronicles. Simply put, he could (and would) regularly talk your ears off. He was humble and kind. A man of true integrity, honor, duty and true grit. Over the course of his 95 momentous years, he defined countless roles. I want to outline a few that stand out in my mind as his youngest daughter. He proudly served our great country in the United States Army in WWII, including the notorious Normandy invasion. His career began as an electrical engineer with Western-Electric as he traveled the globe designing and configuring communication systems. As a young man, he enjoyed boxing and playing softball. Although he was small, he claimed to be a mighty force to be reckoned with. He was a devoted husband to my mother Helen. Until her death in 1996, he lovingly cared for her during her long battle with emphysema. He regularly made rounds to his favorite dining spots including Southern Family, Mama Zoe Michaels and Cracker Barrel. He loved the servers and they loved him. He was fiercely independent (all that grit!), living alone and still driving until the day before his death. I want to thank Drs. Kingery and Kingery and their wonderful staff and Dr. Walter Wray and Terry Deakle, PA-C for the decades of wonderful care and friendship they provided him. He came from a large and loving family in Huntington, West Virginia and leaves behind his only living brother, Larry Eddy (Donna) in California. He had five children, Jamie Spillers (Scott), Steven Eddy (Caroline), Jeffrey Long-Eddy (Deborah), Kimberly Ashburn and Debbie Fletcher (Alan). After Jamie and Kimberly both passed away last October, Daddy was heartbroken. He had many grandchildren and great grandchildren who he loved seeing and regularly bragged on their achievements. He was precious and wonderful, this daddy of mine. My life was better because of his love. He is etched into my soul, my heart and my DNA. I hope you had the chance to meet him as he was truly one of a kind. Hosanna!
