Avanell Coe Speas King

Mrs. Avanell Coe Speas King, 92, passed away July 25, 2017 at Universal Health Care of King. She was born June 12, 1925 in Surry County to the late Bernie E. Coe and Mae Wall Coe. She graduated from Copeland High School in 1942, and attended nursing school until her brother James was killed in service and was needed at home. Avanell later worked for Wachovia Bank and Tucker Insurance. She was a member of Northwoods Baptist Church until moving in 1988 to be closer to her son. After moving to King, she was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church participating in Young at Heart, Ladies Without Partners, Nursing Home Ministry, and many other ministries. She also was a breast cancer survivor and was involved with Pink Broomsticks teaching and encouraging others going through breast cancer. In addition to her parents, Avanell was preceded in death by her husband, Woody King; daughter, Tamera Speas McCracken; granddaughter, Julie McCracken Thomas Peache; and two brothers, James Coe and Melvin Coe (Kathryn). She is survived by her son, Gordon Speas (Jan); two grandchildren, Jeff McCracken (Hilary) and Heather Speas Smith (Shaun); eight great-grandchildren: Holden and Hailey Thomas, Ashley and Aidan Peache, Nate and Dillon McCracken, and Evie and Jax Smith; son-in-law, Wesley McCracken (Christina); one grandson-in-law, Sean Peache; and nephew, Mel Coe (LeA). Per her request, a graveside service will be conducted 10:30 AM Friday, July 28, at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Pastor Thomas Delp officiating. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 536 S Main Street, King, NC 27021, or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank Universal Health Care Staff for their special care and love shown to Avanell during the last two months of her life.
