Azariah Horn

Azariah J. "Jack" Horn, 83, died peacefully at his home on November 9, 2017. He was born on June 6, 1934, to Goldie Norman Horn and Robert Byron Horn of East Bend, NC. He spent the early years of his life in Winston-Salem and his last 40 years in East Bend. For all those who knew him, no matter how long or how briefly, you know words aren't enough to adequately describe him or his life!
He graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1954 and was employed as a supervisor in the Engineering Department at Reynolds Tobacco Company for 33 years. He was married to his high school sweetheart and lifelong love, Lucille Barkley Horn, for 63 years. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Byron "Buck" Horn; brothers Richard, Bill, Robert, Jim, and Norman Horn; and sisters, Bobbie Hall, Jane Ayers, and Sue Beck.
He enjoyed his years of retirement on his farm in East Bend, and always had a large vegetable garden. Jack was a beekeeper for much of his life, and took great pleasure in providing family and friends with jars of golden honey. He chaired the Bees and Honey Exhibit at the Dixie Classic Fair, where he enjoyed seeing old and new friends every year. Jack was far from being shy and never met a stranger in his whole life. He was "discovered" at the Fair by a movie director who needed a person to play a "grandpa farmer" role in a film to be made locally. Jack decided to give it a try. After all, it's not everyone who has the chance to be a movie star at age 78! He had a lot of fun during filming, and enjoyed the attention he got when the movie premiered in Winston-Salem.
Jack thought a willingness to work and be productive was one of the most important traits a person could have. He was a licensed plumber and could fix just about anything that was broken. He was always available to help friends and neighbors - especially widows and those who were less fortunate.
"Horn", as he was known to his family, was always ready with a joke or a tall tale, and was a man of many talents - the quintessential "Jack" of all trades! He never bragged about anything, other than his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. If any of the grandkids needed a ride anywhere at any time, Horn would say "let's go", and never refused their requests for cookies, candy, or Pepsi!
He was a member of Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem and the Barkley Fellowship Sunday School Class. His favorite Bible verse was Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God…" He always said, "If not for that one, there would be no other Bible verses." He was a 60-year Mason, a charter member of Old Town Lodge #751, and a member of Old Town Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Before moving to East Bend, he served as a volunteer fireman for the Forest Hills Fire Department and as President of the Forest Hills Civic Club. He was also a charter member of the Forsyth County Beekeepers Association and served as its President many times.
In addition to his wife Lucille, Jack is survived by his children, Joyce Dellinger (Ron) of East Bend, Leigh Davis (David) of Pfafftown, and Scott Horn of East Bend; grandchildren, Joshua Dellinger (Kristen) of Cortez, CO, Jenna Dellinger of Venice, CA, Heather Powell (Woody) of Charlotte, Amanda Horn (Brian) of Lewisville, Colton, Dylan, and Ethan Horn, of East Bend, and Caleb, Carly, and Hunter Horn of Clemmons; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Maggie, Daisy, Zackary, Rosie and Samuel Dellinger; sister Lillie Bishop of Myrtle Beach, SC; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His funeral service will be held at Augsburg Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be in the Church Columbarium, and the family will greet friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augsburg Lutheran Church, 845 W. 5th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
