Basil Orlando Mungal

Basil Orlando Mungal, 72, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Forsyth Medical Center.

Basil was born on May 5, 1954, in Guyana to the late Basil Oscar Mungal and Thelma Allicock Mungal. In his early years in Guyana, Basil was active in mixed martial arts and soccer. From a young age, he developed a gift for working with his hands, which grew into a natural talent for architecture, mechanics, and building. He enjoyed fixing and building bicycles, motorcycles, and cars.

Basil attended Ohio State for Architecture and assisted the Chief Architect of Guyana on various infrastructure projects. Throughout his career, he worked in engineering and infrastructure support, including work with SECOR, where he contributed to major projects involving foundation laying, testing, and development.

In 1983, Basil welcomed his first son, Brandon, from a previous marriage. In 1993, Basil married his beloved wife, Julie, in the Philippines. Together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, love, and devotion, and raised their son, Brian. His work took him and his family to several places, including Ohio, New Jersey, Tennessee, Georgia, California, Oklahoma, Texas, and Hong Kong, before they eventually settled in North Carolina. After years of traveling for work, Basil chose to remain close to home in North Carolina to support and care for his wife and son.

Basil will be remembered as a hardworking, skilled, and deeply dedicated man who loved his family and took pride in caring for those around him.

Basil is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Mungal; his sons, Brandon Mungal and Brian Mungal; his brothers, Sal Mungal, Terry Mungal, and Ulric Mungal; his sisters, June Singh, Shelly Rosario, and Sharon Mungal; his in-laws, Paul and Beverly Labog; and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
