Bayard Wooster Johnston

Mr. Bayard Wooster Johnston, 89, of Pfafftown, NC, formerly of Upper Montclair, NJ passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born January 18, 1928 in Orange, NJ, raised in North Caldwell, NJ, the son of the late Charles Victor and Myra Loring Smith Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a 1951 graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. He served with the US Navy from 1951 until 1954; from 1951 until 1952 as a Navigator on the USS Charles R. Ware. He met his future wife, Janet Louise Stallings while the two of them worked at Purdue Radio Company in Montclair, NJ. They bonded over a love of classical music and dogs and were married May 25, 1957. The bulk of his career was spent working for UNIVAC at Bell Laboratories in Whippany, NJ as a Senior Scientific Programmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers, Richard Baker Johnston and Charles Thorne Johnston. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Lee Johnston of Winston-Salem, NC, Robin Johnston Howe and husband, Stuart of Kent, WA and Jennifer Alexandra Johnston of Winston-Salem, NC; one son, Duncan Wooster Johnston and wife, Lucy of Las Vegas, NV; two granddaughters, Margaret Johnston Howe of Fairbanks, AK and Julianna Graham Howe of Bellingham, WA; one sister-in-law, Constance Lee Stallings of Ashland, OR; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be remembered for his wit, intelligence, love of books, gardening, music, ships, antique woodworking tools, high-fidelity equipment, but most of all, his family, be they human, canine, or feline. At Mr. Johnston's request, no services were held. Memorials may be made to The Winston-Salem Symphony, 201 S Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, Piedmont Opera, 636 Holly Avenue, NW, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or any animal rescue organization of the donor's choice.
