Mr. Benjamin W. Thomason, Jr., 90, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Thomason was born on November 2, 1925, in Greenwood, South Carolina to the late Benjamin W. and Janette Martin Thomason. He lived most of his early life in Edgefield, South Carolina and several teenage years in Brevard, North Carolina. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy (Signalman 2nd Class) serving most of the time in the Southwest and central West Pacific. He was a 1950 graduate of Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina and actively supported the athletic and development programs of the school for most of his life. Following graduation from college, Mr. Thomason was employed by Integon Corporation (formerly Security Life & Trust Company) for approximately twenty years. In 1970 he joined with five other former Integon employees to organize Triad Life Insurance Corporation. He served as Senior Vice President, Corporate Secretary and as a member of the Board of Directors until the company was sold to a South Carolina insurance company in 1989, when it was moved from Winston-Salem. Mr. Thomason was an active member of the First Baptist Church on Fifth Street in Winston-Salem for 58 years. He was a Life Deacon, which included service as deacon chairman. He served and chaired several church committees and was one of the teachers of the Craven Sunday School Class. In addition to church work, he was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Shepherd's Center, and Churches in Ministry. He was a long-standing member of the Ardmore Community Club, serving one term as President. He was an active golfer and since the age of eight an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his sister, Jeanne T. Newton of Reading and Denver, Pennsylvania. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sheila Todd Thomason; his two sons, Todd Thomason (Kristen) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Scott Thomason (Krista) of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Mary and Emma Thomason of Toronto; and his brother, William M. Thomason of Anderson, South Carolina. A service to celebrate Mr. Thomason's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, 501 W. Fifth St. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Television Ministry of First Baptist Church, 501 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC, 27101, or Senior Services of Winston-Salem, 2895 Shorefair Dr., Winston-Salem, NC, 27105. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mr. Thomason.
