KERNERSVILLE -- Bessie Ann Hicks Childers, 68, died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Kernersville Medical Center. Bessie was born on September 13, 1945 in Guilford County to the late Sandy Moir and Annie Bullins Hicks. She had a very caring personality and was especially mindful of helping others. Bessie had a bright, beautiful smile that she graciously shared with everyone, even through her sickness. She loved visiting Harrah's Casino and playing POGO games on the computer. Bessie was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death by four sisters, Stacy Bullins, Thelma Kellam, Nancy Brown and Ellen Carter; and four brothers, Henry, Ralph, Robert and Donnie Hicks. Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Ken Childers; three children, Vonda Adams, Mark Sides (wife, Kimberly), and Lisa Stafford; five grandchildren, Anthony Sides, Brittney Blackwell, Matthew Adams, Brandon Stafford and Noah Rush; two sisters, Faye May and Alice Morris (husband, Ralph); two brothers, Sandy Hicks (wife, Betty) and Bailey Hicks (wife, Betty); and many special nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 6, 2013 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Carl Brown officiating. Entombment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive family and friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Cancer Society, 514 Daniels Street #109, Raleigh, NC 27605 or the Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center Foundation - Cancer Fund, 1750 Kernersville Medical Blvd, Kernersville, NC 27284.
