Bettie Carmichael

Mrs. Bettie Ball Carmichael, 88, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017 in the arms of her loving husband, B. J. with their twin daughters, Faye and Kaye, and granddaughter, Kristin by her side. She was born April 11, 1929 in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late, Dumont Henry and Eva Mae Whitman Ball. She graduated from Old Town High School in 1947, and then married her one true love, B. J. "Hoagy" Carmichael in 1948. She was the top Avon Products Saleswoman in NC, then opened and operated the Waughtown 5 & 10 Variety Store, then later the Wagon Wheel Restaurant on Waughtown Street from 1965-1995. Bettie loved to cook and make people happy, she had an infectious smile that people never forgot. After retirement, she enjoyed spending her time reading, cooking, going to yard sales to fine treasures and riding around town in their '55 Nomad. She leaves behind her husband of 69 years, B. J. "Hoagy" Carmichael of the home; twin daughters, Faye Carmichael Calder and husband, Jim of Winston-Salem and Kaye Carmichael Carter and husband, Ron of Atlanta, GA; one granddaughter, Kristin Calder of Winston-Salem; one sister, Flo Bassett of Georgetown, TX; one niece, Deborah Crisci and husband, Rob of Georgetown, TX; and a number of other nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is eternally grateful for the loyal and dedicated caregivers that took care of Bettie for the last 2 years of her life. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 7191 Creedmoor Road #130, Raleigh, NC 27613, or the the charity of the donor's choice.
