WINSTON SALEM - Bettie Sue Long Hicks, 91, passed away on December 14, 2018. She was born on July 18, 1926 to John David and Pearl Sink Long in Forsyth County. Bettie Sue was a member of Messiah Moravian Church. Following graduation from Gray High School, Bettie Sue attended business school and was employed by Kester Machinery Company as a secretary for many years. She was a caregiver to family and friends and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes to preschoolers. She also enjoyed music and dancing. In their later years, Bettie Sue and her husband, Ed had the opportunity to travel the world together, bringing home little treasures and creating happy memories. Bettie Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Edgar Coolidge Hicks; sisters, Mary Motsinger, Zona Nifong, and Jane Gaddy; and brothers, Jacob Long and Felix Long. Surviving are her daughters, Ellen LeConte Bates (Charles) of Chester, VA, Catherine Messick Jones (Michael) of Columbia, MO, and Judy Hyde (Steve) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Cynthia Armstrong (Ben), Scott Messick, Kaitlyn Hyde, Parker Hyde, and Alexander Messick; great grandchildren, Owen, Jacob, and Eli Armstrong; and a brother, John S. Long. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM, Friday, December 21, 2018 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Kilbreth officiating. Entombment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made at alz.org.
