Betty S. Gunter

Mrs. Betty Elizabeth Sowers Gunter, 79, of Advance passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at her home. She was born in Davie County on November 4, 1934 to Walter Floyd and Mary Franklin Sowers. Mrs. Gunter was a 1953 graduate of Lewisville School in Lewisville, NC, the same community her and her husband, Wiley, owned and operated a Country Store beginning in 1975. In 1978, the family moved to the Advance area and opened Gunter's Country Store. Betty loved working at the store and did so for over 30 years. Mrs. Gunter was a member of Turners Creek Baptist Church and also attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working with crafts and, most importantly, spending time with her grandson. Mrs. Gunter was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wiley Gunter; and her siblings, including her sister Rachel Ann Foster. She is survived by two sons, Jon Gunter (Ivey) and Keith Gunter (Lori); a grandson, Jonathan; and a very special cousin, Sarah Dot Nahory. A funeral service will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, January 5, 2014 at Turners Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. A committal service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel.
