Mrs. Betty Jean Conder Crater, 98, left her earthly home and went to her heavenly home on May 15, 2025, at Trinity Elms Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born on June 13, 1926, in Matthews, NC to the late Clifford Worth and Lucy Alexander Conder. Her father died when she was very young. Lucy “Mother Ty” remarried Neal James Tyson “Pappy”. He became her loving father. Betty grew up in Charlotte. She later moved to High Point then to Winston-Salem where she graduated from Hanes High School. She worked for Southern Bell for three years after graduation.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel Faw Crater “Bud”; her beloved son, Barry Faw Crater “Bucky”; her sister, Helen Condor Bottom (Jim); a very special niece, Kathy Alspaugh; a very special aunt Annie Wilson who lived to be 112. She is survived by a former daughter in law, Becky Dunn (Bob); a nephew, Terry Bottom (Sue) and many other special friends who loved and cared for her. Also surviving are three cousins, Jenny Chambers, Lorinna Lowrance, David Wilson and other special nieces and nephews. In 1947 she married Bud Crater and became a devoted wife and mother. In her later life she lived in Mt. Airy and moved back to Clemmons in 2008 and resided at Clemmons Court. She had a great love of her faith with God and was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. A devoted Christian, she sang in the choir and was a very active member there.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2025 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. John Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2170 Bethel Methodist Church Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to Trellis Supportive Care – Davie, 377 Hospital Street, Office 103, Mocksville, NC 27208.
