Betty Newberry

Mrs. Betty Lou Smith Newberry, 74, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018, at her home. She was born in Surry County on June 2, 1944 to the late Opal Leona Marshall Smith and James Burt Smith. Mrs. Newberry was a member of Berean Baptist Church. She retired from Hanes Hosiery with 25+ years of service. Mrs. Newberry was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newberry was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 46 years, Lavon A. Newberry; two sons, James Martin Whitaker and Donald Andrew Newberry; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five siblings: Barbara Settle, Nancy Shumate, Jackie Smith, Bobby Dale Smith, and Shirley Grayley; also, numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 27, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Dr. Ronnie Baity officiating. Burial will follow 2:30 p.m. at South Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in Piney Creek, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service and again following the graveside at 327 Cornfield Road, Piney Creek, NC.
