Betty Lee Woosley Phelps

Mrs. Betty Lee Woosley Phelps, age 97, of Clemmons, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Trinity Elms. She was born June 7, 1929, in Davidson County to the late Roy Pinkston Woosley and Celestie Lambeth Woosley.

More than anything else, Betty considered her faith and being a mother, grandmother and later a great-grandmother to be her life’s greatest blessing and purpose. To her children she was “Mom,” but to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was simply “Mamaw”—a name she treasured and a role she embraced with all her heart. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She found great joy in watching her family grow through each new generation, and the love she gave to her family remains her greatest legacy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Robert Lee Phelps, affectionately known to the family as “Papaw”; one sister, Florence Barnhardt; and two brothers, Charles and Burch Woosley.

She is survived by three sons, Thomas “Tom” Lee Phelps (Mary Catherine), Stephen Robert Phelps (Cathy), and David Charles Phelps (Margaret); two daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Sue Phelps and Janet “Jan” Phelps Mays (Charley); eleven cherished grandchildren, Andrea, Ellen, Charlotte, Emily, Robin, Andrew, Brian, Caitlin, Rachel, Daniel, and Michael; thirteen beloved great-grandchildren, Toby, Cricket, Beatrix, Antonia, Mary, Charlie, Evelyn, Adelaide, Bert, Hadley, Paul, Nico, and Josiah; and a very special friend, Yolanda Couser.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers and staff of Trinity Elms and Trellis Supportive Care for the kindness, dignity, and loving care they provided during Betty’s final days.

A funeral service will be held at 4: 00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, officiated by Pastor Michael Phelps. Burial will follow in First Christian Church of Clemmons Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
