Mrs. Betty Lou Smith Shelton, age 86, widow of Mr. Cicero Thomas Shelton of the (Francisco Community) passed away Tuesday evening at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. Mrs. Shelton was born in Stokes County February 9, 1927 to the late James Ernest and Lois Meadows Smith. Mrs. Shelton graduated from King High School with the class of 1944, was a member of Francisco Presbyterian Church, serving in the church choir for over 40 years , was an elder for 6 years, served in many capacities with the Presbyterian women, and did many of the decorations for the church. Betty was co-owner and operator of Cicero's Grocery serving the Francisco Community for many years. She was honored at a reception sponsored by Stokes County Arts Council on February 8, 1998, honoring Stokes County farm women, she received recognition for her home canning. Betty was an avid needle crafter, she enjoyed her needlework to have and to share with family and friends. Her work can be found from the East coast to the West coast, and even overseas. She enjoyed working with the Senior Citizens Department in Stokes County in the Francisco Community. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law: Doris and Phillip Jessup of Westfield, One Sister: Brenda James of Germanton, two brothers and a sister-in-law: James and Nancy Smith of Stem, NC, and Frank Smith of King, four grandchildren: Thomas & Tiffany Sands, Lyndsey & Darrin Haywood, Mark & Erin Jessup, Austin Jessup, seven great grandchildren: Andrew & Pam Sands, Makayla Sands, Kristin Sands, Jacob Haywood, Troy Haywood, Avery Jessup, Hunter Jessup, one great- great-grandchild: Noah Sands. Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cicero Shelton, a daughter Carolyn Sands, and a brother Robert (Bob) Smith. Funeral services will be conducted Friday September 6, 2013 at 3:00 pm at the Francisco Presbyterian Church by Rev. Tracey Collins, Rev. Terry Collins, and Rev. Rickey Rogers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Francisco Presbyterian Church Thursday September 5, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and at other times at Mrs. Shelton's home in Francisco, NC.
