Mrs. Betty Sweatman Stokes passed away peacefully in her home Friday, November 7, 2014. She was born in Forsyth County on December 22, 1928 to the late Theodore Roosevelt and Alma Gentry Sweatman. Betty was a member of Friedland Moravian Church and Credit Women International. At Friedland Moravian Church she taught Sunday School, was a member of Circle #1, and sang in the Choir. After she retired from Watkins Inc., Betty worked in tax services for over 20 years. She was preceded in death by her first husband Vernon Lemons; her second husband Robert Stokes; and a son Roger Lemons. Betty is survived by a son Robert Lemons (Violetta); daughter Jan Vandiver (Randy); siblings Margaret Burton, Robert Sweatman, Barbara Rathbone, Terry Sweatman (Linda), Linda Loman, and Ronnie Sweatman; very close cousin Ann Snipes; grandchildren Kelly Lemons, Tabitha Lemons, Dylan Vandiver, and Ethan Vandiver; and six great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all. Everyone who had the privilege to know her was deeply touched by her strength, positive outlook and sweet, generous nature. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 11, at Friedland Moravian Church with Rev. David Merritt officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Church graveyard.
