Betty Sue Bovender Fulton, 98, of Clemmons, NC passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Mrs. Fulton was born August 16, 1927, in Winston-Salem to James Arthur Bovender and Ellen Sarah Sale Bovender. In Betty’s early years, she worked for Winston-Salem staples Dewey’s, Hanes Hosiery, and RJR Tobacco before working full time in the home after starting their family. She was an avid gardener and lover of all things plants. Betty and Charlie spent many years traveling with friends and family. She was also a longtime volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program for more than 50 years. She is survived by son, Steve Fulton of King; daughter, Melissa Penland of Clemmons, and granddaughter, Heather Penland and Neil of Mocksville; sister, Sara Taylor of Winston Salem and extended family Angie Moser and Nancy Gaston of Phoenix, AZ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charlie Fulton, daughter, Marguerite Fulton; brothers, JA Bovender and Phillip (Billy) Bovender, and sisters; Husie Rothrock, Maxine Cox, and Melba Beeson. Betty was loved dearly and will be deeply missed. The family will receive family and friends Saturday, May 2, 2026 from 12:30-1:30pm at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, 108 E. Kinderton Way, Advance, NC 27006. A graveside service will follow at 2pm in Westlawn Gardens of Memory, 6135 Ridgecrest Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to say a special thank you to Jennifer, Debbie and Robin with Trellis Supportive Care for their compassionate assistance. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center,231 Melrose St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 - A center special to our family for the care they provided for Charlie in his last years.
