Betty Joan Newell Thompson

Mrs. Betty Joan Newell Thompson (90), a loving mother, devoted wife and faithful follower of her Lord and Saviour, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Clemmons Village II. She was born in Forsyth County on July 30, 1933, to the late James Frank and Ola Mae Starbuck Newell. Mrs. Thompson, graduated from James A. Gray high school in 1951, retired from the Forsyth County Register of Deeds and was a long-standing member of Christ Wesleyan Church. In her earlier years, she also worked as a school crossing guard at Lewisville Elementary School and for the Winston-Salem Police Department. Preceding her in death was her husband, Benjamin Davis Thompson; six sisters, Edith Culbreth, Virginia Brandon, Donola Newell, Pauline Floyd, Mildred Sells, and Gracie Fishel and a brother, James Odell Newell. Surviving is her daughter, Stephanie Thompson Kelley (Richard) and several nieces, nephews, and their children. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, July 8, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. A burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or a charitable organization or church of one’s choosing.
