Brenda Jean Edwards, 75, of Rural Hall, died Sunday, May 10, 2026 at her home following a period of declining health. She was the daughter of Raymond Vestal Edwards and Minnie Lee Denny Edwards Winfree and the sister of Melvin Vestal Edwards, all now deceased. Brenda was a graduate of South Stokes High School and retired from the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service. During her 38-year career with the USDA, she was among the first females to hold a supervisory position in the Cotton and Tobacco Program. She had a matter-of-fact personality and a will and determination that served her well throughout her life. She was a devoted animal lover and provided a loving home to many beloved pets over the years. She is survived by a niece, Amanda Kirkman (husband Gregg), a nephew Christopher Edwards, a special cousin, Gary Merritt and his wife, Lana, and a host of other relatives and friends. Per Brenda’s request, there will be no formal services held. Rather, to honor her memory, memorials may be made to the Friends of the Stokes Shelter, 1111 Dodgetown Road, Walnut Cove, NC 27052 or friendsofstokesshelter@gmail.com.
