Brenda Jane Robbins Hockaday, 77, of Clemmons, passed into the more immediate presence of Christ on July 9, 2025, after a valiant battle with ALS. She was surrounded by her closest family at home.
Brenda was born on October 30, 1947, to the late Treva Belle Doub Robbins and William Robbins in Winston-Salem and grew up in Lewisville with her five younger siblings, Barbara, Marsha, Martha, Larry, and Debra. Brenda graduated from West Forsyth High School in 1966, then went on to study business at Brevard College where she graduated in 1968. Later, she was elected to their Board of Directors and enjoyed serving in that capacity. Brevard and the surrounding area held a special place in her heart.
During summer break from college, she met her future husband, Roger Hockaday. They married on September 28, 1968, and were best friends and partners in life. They enjoyed traveling, car shows, their church family, and so many other things. Roger was always proud of Brenda's accomplishments and was her greatest cheerleader. They had one beloved daughter, Leigh Ann Hockaday Hafkey.
After graduation, she started a job at the Bank of Winston-Salem as a teller. Wachovia acquired that bank, and Brenda enjoyed a 30-year career there where she made numerous life-long friends, traveled extensively, and retired in 2003 after managing the International Department's Standby & Letter of Credit and Compliance Training departments as Vice President for many years. After her retirement, Brenda enjoyed spending time with her friends, as well as her grandchildren, Espen and Kirsten, reading, going on walks, and being involved in church and ministry opportunities, such as teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school. Brenda was a lifelong Christian and showed Christ's love to others every opportunity she got.
In addition to her parents, Brenda was preceded in death by her in-laws, Wilbur and Lillian Hockaday; her grandson, Espen Maclean Hafkey; and her sister, Barbara Kiger.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Roger Hockaday; her daughter, Leigh Hafkey and granddaughter, Kirsten Hafkey of Clemmons; four of her siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with Pastor Kevin Frack officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Hope Moravian Church Graveyard in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The ALS Association, www.als.org, an organization Brenda passionately supported and benefitted from after her diagnosis.
