C. Mccard

Mrs. C. LaVerne Barge McCard, 88, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. LaVerne was born on September 7, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. She was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She loved the Lord and her testimony was to praise Him with song! She began singing at age eight, and through the years, sang for the churches of her memberships, Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, East Point, GA; Colonial Baptist Church, Memphis, TN; Trinity Baptist Church, Germantown, TN; and Ardmore Baptist Senior Choir, Winston-Salem, NC. She was soloist for North Georgia College Orchestra and toured internationally with the Baptist World Alliance Choir. At Colonial Baptist Church, she played handbells and directed a girl's ensemble. She met her husband of 56 years, Roy McCard at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA. LaVerne was soloist for Dahlonega Methodist Church, Dahlonega, GA, while attending school. She also attended the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, where she began studying voice, later changing her major and earning her BA degree in Early Childhood Education. LaVerne was a wonderful seamstress and made most of her and her daughter's clothing. She and others from Ardmore Baptist's "handicrafters" would enjoy getting together and make sewn items for the elderly and those in the hospital. She also enjoyed painting and making crafts. LaVerne loved "her Atlanta Braves!" After raising her son, Scott E. McCard and daughter, Janis L. McCard, she worked as a secretary for WABCO, Inc. Later she worked for the US Army Corp of Engineers as Executive Secretary to the Deputy District Engineer, Memphis, TN. She was a charter member of Zeta Tau Alpha, women's fraternity. She stayed an active member of the Zeta alumni as long as possible with the High Point University chapter. After the death of her husband in 2007, she moved to Winston-Salem, NC, to be closer to her daughter, Janis. She is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Gladys Barge, of East Point, GA; and her husband, Roy E. McCard of Memphis, TN. LaVerne leaves behind two children, Scott McCard, Hernando, MS, and Janis McCard, (Gail Shaw), Winston-Salem, NC; two grandchildren, Lori P. Hull (Chris), Walkertown, NC, and Russell W. Palmer (Jessica), Westampton, NJ; one brother, Leeman R. Barge (Rebecca); three great-grandchildren, Brianna Hull, Emily Hull, and Winston Palmer; her second love, Jack Hickman; and a host of other relatives she cherished.
