Carlene Freeman Mayes

Ms. Carlene Freeman Mayes, 87, passed away on Tuesday May 28, 2024, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on May 11, 1937, to the late Carl Freeman and Verna Wright Freeman in Surry County, NC. 

Carlene was a nurse for 29 years, working at The Oaks Nursing Home. She loved working in her flower gardens. Carlene was a seamstress for many years and had a love of crafts of all kinds. 

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her son Charles Stephen Bates, Sr., grandson Charles Wayne Goins, and sister Billie Tullock. Carlene is survived by her grandson Charles (Jessica) Bates, and their children Alyssa Bates and Abby Wilfong; granddaughter Melanie (Jason) Reedy and their children Wesley Gray and Logan Gray; sister Mary Lou; four brothers Spencer, Calvin, Thomas, Ray, and their families; daughter-in-law Bonnie Pruitt; Reneé Hall, J.R. Phillips, Brittany Phillips, and their families; a large extended family; and many lifelong friends. 

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday May 31, 2024, at 12 noon at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Jason Holley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Thursday May 30, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. Burial will follow the services at Forsyth Memorial Park.
