Carol Gwendolyn Hunter, 93, passed away at Forsyth Medical Center on March 2, 2017. She was born Christmas day in 1923 and lived in the South Fork community of Winston-Salem, until moving to Arbor Acres two years ago.
Ms. Hunter graduated from Lewisville High School and Draughn's Business College in Winston-Salem. She worked for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company from 1942-1965. Carol was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and served for many years at Sunnyside Ministry. She most recently was on the Welcoming Committee at Arbor Acres where she also enjoyed painting pictures, making jewelry and playing bingo.
In 1947, Carol was the first person from North Carolina to receive a corneal transplant which was performed in New York. She was also a 60-year, breast cancer survivor.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents; Robert Waldo & Erma Elizabeth Sheek Hunter and two sisters; Zelma Lorene Dunnagan and Sara Frances Yokley. She is survived by one brother; John Robert (""Bob"") Hunter of Clemmons and six nieces and nephews; Linda Shouse (George), Elizabeth Norkum, Robert Dunnagan (Sara), Susan Hazzard (Ken), Sandra O'Brien (Tracy) and Michael Hunter (Shelli); eight great nieces and nephews and numerous great-great nieces & nephews all of whom she enjoyed mothering.
Join the family on March 5, 2017, at 2pm for a celebration of life in the sanctuary at New Philadelphia Moravian Church. The family will receive guests in the banquet room following the graveside portion of the service.
