Mrs. Carolyn Gordon Black, 76, peacefully passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home while surrounded by her family. She was born on February 18, 1942 in Kingstree, SC to the late Basil Earl and Nellie Foxworth Gordon. She most recently lived in Winston-Salem, NC but also spent a large part of her life raising her family in Sumter, SC. As a mother and grandmother, Carolyn selflessly devoted herself to her family. When her children were still at home, she was present for every game, recital, play or other event that her children participated in - usually with a video camera propped upon her shoulder. Carolyn was present for the birth of all of her grandchildren and they all shared a very special and unique relationship with her. Her absolute favorite topic of conversation was her grandchildren and her pride and love for them was easy to see. The door to Carolyn’s home was always open, and she welcomed everyone through that door with a seat, a snack and/or cup of coffee and a listening ear. Carolyn was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends over the years. Her home was often the place where all the family gathered and she was always the perfect host. Preceding her in death was her husband, Samuel Black, Sr. and a sister, Betty Johnson. Surviving are a son, Samuel Black, Jr. (Elena); daughter, Kelli Balash (Chris); six grandchildren, Nicholas, Ella, Miriam, Drew, Zaza, and Rylan; two sisters, Weegie Taylor (Paul) and Lynda Black (Denny); also surviving are two nieces, Shannon Alexander and Becca McNerney and two nephews, Scott Stevens and Clay Taylor. A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel, with Pastor Ron Garner officiating. Visitation with the family will be available prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
