Mrs. Carolyn Rachel Storer Briggs, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Homestead Hills Assisted Living. She was born on September 10, 1937, in Piscataquis County, Maine to Walter Francisco Storer and Lurene Lord Storer. During her high school years at Monson Academy in Monson, ME, Carolyn was an avid musician, playing various instruments with the high school band and as a member of a small local dance band. She continued developing her musical talent throughout her adulthood. For many years, Carolyn worked as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Milton, VT and later served as an Optometric Assistant in Rutland, VT. She was a skilled crafter and especially enjoyed embroidery, quilting, crocheting, and knitting. Carolyn was also a great cook and homemaker. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clayton C. Briggs, a Korean War era veteran, and her three sons, Walter James Briggs, Richard Owen Briggs, and Galen Cecil Briggs, as well as two older brothers Henry Judson Storer and Berwin Walter Storer.
She is survived by her daughter, Gail Simpson (husband, James) of Advance NC; three grandchildren, Gabrielle Marie Myrick, Solomon Nicholas Briggs, and Evan Robert Briggs; and four great grandsons Alexander Nicolas Corsones, Conner James Myrick, Carter James Moulton, and Robert Clayton Briggs; a younger brother, Allan Storer (wife, Ellen) of South Carolina; her sister-in-law, Yvette Storer of Florida; and a close family friend David Alberico (wife, Jane); and several special nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Carolyn will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place later at Hillside Cemetery in her hometown of Monson, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Brenner’s Children Hospital at 1 Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157 or to The Monson Historical Society.
