Carrie Mae Watkins Pitts died after a short illness on October 18, 2015 at the age of 101. She was born in Forsyth County on February 8, 1914 to the late Charles Walon and Minnie Linebach Watkins. She was also preceded in death by Oliver A. Pitts, her husband of 54 years, and brothers and sisters Pauline Watkins Hundley, William Roy Watkins, Lola Watkins Nifong and Olin June Watkins. She is survived by son Robert Pitts of Winston-Salem and daughter June Pitts Buzzard and husband Buzz of Advance, as well as her sister Hazel Watkins Jaro of Mooresville, and numerous nieces and nephews. She lived her entire life in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County and was the last surviving member of the Griffith High School Class of 1932. She worked in Food Services at both Baptist Hospital and Forsyth Memorial Hospital, where she volunteered for many years after her retirement. Since her marriage in 1942, she attended and was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church and the Susanna Wesley Bible Class and is believed to have been the church's oldest member for several years. She attended Mt Tabor's first Easter morning early service in 1939 as the guest of her future husband. During her youth she was a member of and attended Advent Moravian Church. The family welcomes friends to a visitation at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway from 6:00 PM -9:00 PM, Tuesday, October 20. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church followed by a graveside service in the church cemetery. Her family knows that she would have wished to especially thank the staff and other residents of Vienna Village Retirement Center, all of whom have been especially kind to her while she lived there for the past 9 years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robin Hood Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
