Catherine Tanner Younger

Catherine Tanner Younger, 91, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 31, 1922, in Gladys, Virginia the daughter of the late William Thomas Tanner and Lizzie Smith Tanner. She came to Winston-Salem in 1947 with Western Electric and later worked at Davis Department Store. She spent many years as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital and was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church. She was an avid baseball fan and loved Tarheel basketball and football. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Thomas Carlton Younger; 3 brothers, Robert, Thomas and David Tanner and 4 sisters, Eunice Bailey, Christine Jordan, Anna Coleman and Elizabeth Tucker. She is survived by a son, Carl Younger and wife Tempe of Kinston, daughter Kathy Younger of Falls Church, Virginia; grandchildren Carl Younger, III (Ramsay) of Raleigh, Ginny Meier (Doug) of Washington DC, Tripper Parham of Moorehead City, Fuller Parham of Winston-Salem, and Cooper Bratton (Sam) of Raleigh; and great grandchildren Grayson, McKinley and Tanner Younger as well as Sam and Parham Bratton, all of Raleigh. She is also survived by brothers, Lester Tanner (Jean) and Louis Tanner (Trish) as well as sisters Barbara Farmer, Alice Bailey (Morris), Rachel Dawson (Kenneth) and Marie Hodge (George). A memorial service will be conducted at 12:00 noon March 10, 2014 at Hayworth- Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
