Charles Millard Harvel, 73, of Advance, NC, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2017, at his home, surrounded by and in the loving care of his closest family and friends. Born in Englewood, NJ on December 28, 1943 to Charles Edwin and Dorothy Clark Rowe Harvel, Charlie grew up in Palisades Park, NJ. He graduated from Cliffside Park Senior High School; and, after completing his military service, attended Farleigh Dickinson University, graduating with a degree in Accounting. Charlie joined the USMC in August of 1962 and served through August of 1968, assigned at various times to the 2nd and 3rd Marine Divisions. His service included tours of duty in the Mediterranean and Vietnam. Professionally, Charlie worked as an accountant in the private sector for several years before entering civilian public service. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service after a 30-year career, having held a variety of tax administration positions in Buffalo, NY, Austin, TX, and Washington, DC. Retiring in 2000, Charlie and his wife moved to Advance, NC in 2001, where they have resided for the past sixteen years. Since retirement, Charlie donated many hours to the Meals-on-Wheels program in Davie County, NC, often driving several times a week to help provide hot meals to the County's shut-ins. He also pursued his favorite interests, among which were genealogical research, the study of military history, and antiquing. Researching his own personal family history led to membership in the SAR, his patriot ancestor heralding from Guilford County, NC. By nature, he was a kind and compassionate man. He had a wonderful sense of humor; and, his thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Barbara Miller Harvel; three sisters - Lillie Mae Harvel Masterson (husband John, Sr.) of Madison Heights, MI, Barbara Jeanne Harvel Jackson of Fair Haven MI, and Laurie Susan Calvert of Garfield, NJ. He is also survived by five nieces, one nephew, five great-nieces and three great-nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by his father and his step-mother, Charles Edwin and Jessie Bouyea Harvel, and by his step-father and his mother, William and Dorothy Rowe Calvert. Although a memorial service has not been planned, the family will receive visitors on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at the Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. Charlie's family will be forever grateful for the love and support received from friends and neighbors, especially those who gave their all to help him during his last days - Debbie Dotson, Sue Royall, Jim Murphy, Ina Beavers, Steve and Susan Curl, and Doris Ledbetter. A special thank you as well to Dr. Patricia Zekan, MD, Hope Beacham, ACNP, and Angela Martin, RN of Novant Health Oncology Specialists - Winston Salem, and to the nursing angels of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
