Mr. Charles Dewey Hooker, age 94, passed away March 16, 2018 at Village Care of King. He was born August 15, 1923 in Surry County to the late Addison Royal Hooker and Nora Blanche Westmoreland Hooker and was raised in Stokes County. Charles served in the United States Army during WWII. After leaving the military, he was employed by the United States Postal Service in 1946 and served as the postmaster of Tobaccoville and Pfafftown offices, retiring in 1978. He loved his country and became a member of the American Legion, Post 290 of King for 72 years serving in different capacities to honor many veterans. In May of 2010, he was honored by taking part in The Flight of Honor to visit the war memorials in Washington DC that WXII sponsored. Charles was a faithful member of Antioch United Methodist Church and served faithfully in many areas of the church while his health allowed. He was very involved in many community and state organizations. Charles was a volunteer at King Outreach Ministries. In Addition, he was instrumental in establishing The Tobaccoville Veteran's Memorial and establishing the King Water system. He served as a board member for Farm Bureau and was active with the Boy Scouts of America in the Old Richmond area as well as with the Old Richmond Grange. Charles achieved many different awards through his dedication of his community and willingness to express his ideas for the benefit of others. He was truly a community person. He enjoyed farming so much that he farmed until he was 91 years old. Charles also enjoyed weaving on a barn loom and stamp collecting. He was truly a community person. Most importantly, he loved his family. The highlight of his day was when there were family gatherings to spend time with those he loved. He was truly loved by his family, and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Agnes Helsabeck Hooker; three sisters, Nancy Calloway, Margaret Suttles, and Janet Hooker; one brother, Addison Hooker, Jr., and one great-grandson, Samuel Ensley. He is survived by two daughters, Loretta Haithcock (Larry), and Donna Yarbrough (Wally); two sons, Byron Hooker, and Keith Hooker (Lynn); eleven grandchildren: Susan Ward (Wane), Scott Haithcock (Dawn), Mark Ensley, Jonathan Ensley (Angela), Adam Ensley (Melinda), Jason Hooker (Amy), Josh Hooker, Emily Hooker, Nathan Hooker (Dawn), Justin Hooker, and Kerri Hooker; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Hooker, and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 Tuesday, March20, 2018 at Antioch United Methodist Church, Rural Hall with Pastor Duncan Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery at which time military honors will be observed. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 P.M to 8:00 P.M. at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Legion, Post 290, 446 S.
