Mr. Charles Porter Payne, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Village Care of King. Mr. Payne was born June 18, 1936 in Forsyth County and was parented by the late Dewey and Norma Ruark. He graduated from Clemmons High School. Charles served his country in The United States Air Force. He was a member of Northwest Baptist Church where he was a deacon and sang in the choir. Charles retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Elks Lodge, was an avid reader and loved to play golf and fish. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife Patti of 57 years, two daughters; Maricia Duryea and husband Chuck and Lori Winters and husband John, two Grandchildren; Nicholas Winters and Mallory Winters and Fiancé Jay, one brother; Joe Felts and wife Jeannie, one sister; Lena Minor and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Northwest Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Ellen Strickland and Rev. Tony Brown officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Internment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Northwest Baptist Church, 407 Petree Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27106.
