Charles S. “Slick” Poteat, 87, passed away peacefully with friends by his side on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, Charles was the son of the late Geneva B. and Percy G. Poteat and was raised in Winston-Salem. He graduated from James A. Gray High School in 1956 and went on to pursue extensive education and training in aviation, intelligence, and truth verification, earning multiple certifications throughout his life.
Charles had a diverse and accomplished career spanning aviation, law enforcement, private investigation and ballroom dance instructions. He was the owner and president of International Investigations for 37 years and served as President of the North Carolina Truth Verification association, where he trained law enforcement officers and private investigators. He also volunteered at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
A devoted man of faith, Charles was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and participated in numerous ministries and outreach efforts including Habitat for Humanity and the Konnoak Hills Lions Club. In his younger years, he was involved in NASCAR Modified Circuit racing.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his grandparents, who greatly influenced his life.
He is survived by his beloved companion, Vicki Jackson; and his loyal four-legged friends, “Little Slick” and “Sweetie”. Charles is remembered for his love of God's word, his passion for learning, and his many stories of life experiences.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Josh Boles officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 7035 Franklin Rd. Lewisville, NC 27023.
