Mr. Charles Andrew West Sr., 85, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Charles was born in Forsyth County to the late William Howard West Sr. and Mildred Vernon West on October 26, 1937. He served his country in the United States Army, during the Vietnam War. He served in the Military Police Corps during the desegregation of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in Oxford, Mississippi where he later returned and was awarded a key to the city for his service. Charles retired from the Winston-Salem Police Department with 27 years of service. He was a liaison officer at Carver High School and loved being a part of the “Officer Friendly” program. He was a long-time member of Grace Baptist in Winston-Salem where he served as Head Usher for 30 years, trustee for two terms, AWANA Co-Commander, and, arguably his favorite post, as a greeter. He served his community on the board of directors for the Griffith Fire Department and the South Little League. He belonged to the Gold Wing Road Riders Motorcycle Club and rode with them to all of the US continental states. Charles West was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He loved people and he lived his life in service to others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Forrest West.

He is survived by a daughter, DeAnne Manning (Lee); son, Chuck West (Millicent); grandchildren, Forrest Manning, Jessica Huffman (Bradley), Madelyn Long (Zack), and Gracie West; brother, Bill West; sisters, Phyllis Drane and Barbara Wooten. A funeral service will be held at Grace Baptist Church at 11 am on Thursday, May 11, 2023. The family will receive friends at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Children’s Home in Lexington, NC., 3844 NC-8, Lexington, NC 27292. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworthmiller.com.
