Charles Everette Wood

Charles Everette Wood, 83, of Winston-Salem passed away on January 5, 2014. He had been surrounded and held by his children in the days before he went to his eternal home. Everette, as he was most commonly called, was born in the 'great State of Wilkes' on December 7, 1930 to Charles Everette Wood and Alma Burcham Wood and a large family of brothers and sisters ... each of whom he loved most dearly. As a boy, he loved to 'ride to town' in the wagon with his dad ... His jobs at home were milking cows and chopping wood. In the evenings, his dear mama would read aloud from the Bible by the wood-stove. . .a memory he cherished. He retired from Hanes Dye & Finishing after 21 years on the night shift and worked most days at Beckner Drywall. He had previously worked in the restaurant business at the original Staley's in Wilkes County...moving to Winston-Salem with his beautiful young bride, Mary, to help run the first Staley's here and then the Chuck Wagon Restaurant on Stratford Road. He reveled in stories about those days, which will be treasured in the hearts of his children and grandchildren. Mostly, his kids will remember his strong, sweet and steady presence...his selfless devotion to providing for them at much physical personal sacrifice...his raw and tender wisdom...the ease with which he said 'I love you' even to the end...his ability to draw friends in with his warm personality and humor...his balance of great humility of self with pride in hard work and family... and mostly, his earthly example of Christ-like unwavering love for his own. Everette is survived by his ex-wife (neither of whom ever re-married), Mary Wood, his sons...Doug Wood and wife Barbara, Dickie Wood, Ricky Wood and David ""Rusty"" Wood...his daughter, Pam Hondros and husband Pocky...his grandchildren, Lindsay Wood Jacobo and husband, Lucio, Jordan Wood and Lucas Hondros...his brothers, Clifford Wood, Jesse Wood, Clyde Wood and wife Mary...his sisters, Ethel Walker, Metella 'Toots' and husband Sammy Perkins...as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Rachel Baptist Church Cemetery in Roaring River, NC. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family would like to acknowledge their dad's long-time physician, Dr. Mark P. Maier and his nurse, Kathy. Dr. Maier meant so much to Everette and his daughter, Pam for as she says 'keeping Daddy going' for so many years with compassion, concern, deep personal understanding and love. Eternal thanks. In words quoted by a family friend from the movie 'Lonesome Dove' ... this strong, kind man was 'Cheerful in all weathers...Never shirked a task. Splendid behavior.'
