Mrs. Cheryl Dean Dixon Byerly, 76, of Clemmons, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 22, 1949, to the late Edwin Thomas Dixon, Sr. and Doraden “Deanie” Robertson Dixon in Forsyth County, NC.
Cheryl graduated from East Forsyth High School in 1967, before continuing her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she would graduate in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. She later furthered her education at Appalachian State University, graduating with a master’s degree in Community Education.
In 1977, while working for the City of Winston Salem, she met the love of her life, Norman “Lee” Byerly, and together they would spend almost 49 wonderful years together. Cheryl also worked for the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources, in the GED program at Forsyth Technical Community College, and after her retirement, she worked at Beth’s Hallmark in Clemmons, NC.
Cheryl was a devoted member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Clemmons, NC, where she served in many capacities.
In her free time, Cheryl enjoyed sewing, making quilts, and attending quilt camps with many of her quilting friends.
In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ryan Lee Byerly.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Norman “Lee” Byerly of the home; her brother, Edwin Thomas (Anne) Dixon, Jr; sister-in-law, Kay Broom; nieces, Katherine (Dave) Toms and Charlotte Dixon; great-nieces, Mabel and Holly; a very special friend, Ashlyn (Ben) Staley and her three boys, Rylan, Brayden, and Holden; special friend Mayne Hill and family; her many quilting friends; and her canine companions, Katie, Lacey, and Sidney.
A graveside will be held for Cheryl in the Centenary United Methodist Church Cemetery on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:30PM with Rev. Oscar Zuniga and Rev. Dr. Randy Lucas officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the church.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Cheryl’s caregivers with the Hospice of Davidson County and Bayada Home Health Care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 5280 Hampton Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012, the Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292, or to a charity of your choice.
Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the Byerly family.
