Mr. Clarence W. Gabard, 99, of Winston-Salem died August 28, 2017 at Salemtowne Phillips Health Care Center. He was born July 15, 1918 in Davie County to John Henry and Charlotte Kessler Gabard. He graduated from Clemmons High School in 1937. Mr. Gabard was employed by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in the Engineering Department for over 45 years. During World War II Clarence served with the 34th Infantry Division in Ireland, North Africa and Italy. He took part in the campaigns of Naples Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley, Tunisia and Anzio. He received several decorations and citations including the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. His unit served over 300 days in combat zones. Clarence was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher, usher, band member as well as serving on the Board of Elders and the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Bethabara Concert Band, Salem Band and Salem Flute Chair. On April 5, 1942, he was married to Clara Pardue Gabard, who preceded him in death on February 18, 2007. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Dianne Combs (Reginald) of Lewisville and two sons, Kenneth A. Gabard (Deborah) of Ithaca NY and Donald L. Gabard of Los Angeles, CA; four grandchildren, Emily Yeatts (John), Edward Combs (Laurel), Laurel and Anna Clare Gabard; three great grandchildren, Jack and Water Yeatts and Clara Combs as well as a special nephew and niece, Bobby and Joyce Gabard. A graveside service will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park at 2:00 pm on September 1, 2017 officiated by Dr. Worth Green. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of New Philadelphia Moravian Church or a charity of the donor's choice. Online Condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
