Buzz died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife, after 2 years in declining health. Born in Baird, Texas, to Cleo and Claude Funk, where his father was in the oil field business. Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Kate Zimmerman Funk (who was faithfully beside him throughout his sickness), daughters Katrina Sapp (Lewis) of Pfafftown and Claudia F Moreno of Charlotte. He had four wonderful grandchildren, Kelsey Sapp of Clemmons, Palmer Brown (Maria) of Charlotte, Tayler Sapp of Winston-Salem, and Isabella Moreno of Charlotte, his loving sister, Patricia Johnson of Fairfield, IL and lots of nieces and nephews. A special thank you to his nephews - Lewis Dowell (Carol) for their weekly outing of going out to eat, he really loved it. Also a thanks to his nephew Andy Johnson and niece Diane Johnson Taylor for driving his sister, Patty in 2 weeks ago for a wonderful visit with him. Thanks also to the special neighbors, Ricky McDowell and Lisa Wike for always being there. Buzz proudly served our country for 20 years in the US Army with the 82nd Airborne. In May of 1969, he saw battle at Dong Ap Bai, also known as Hamburger Hill. There he earned one of his 2 Bronze Stars. During his career he was stationed multiple times in Fort Bragg, NC, twice in Korea (earning Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal), and Fort Buckner, Okinawa. Buzz was a well-respected ROTC instructor at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia and Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. It was during his time in the mountains of Georgia that he found his passion for fishing. Later this passion turned to golf. Where he spent many a day at Wilshire Golf course with friends. Lots of wonderful memories. The memorial service will be held Thursday, October 5th, at Hayworth Miller on Silas Creek Parkway at 3:30 pm, with burial at Parklawn Memorial Park afterwards. The family will receive guest prior to the service from 2pm to 3 pm. The family would like to request in lieu of flowers donations be made to Wounded Warriors Foundation.
