Clyde Laster

Clyde Elmer Laster, 88, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2023 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.  Clyde was born October 16, 1934, in Wilkes County, to late parents Collie Mickle and Council Laster.  He was also predeceased by brothers Otis Laster and Martin Laster and sisters Mae Templeton and Ruth Smith.

Clyde attended Wilkes County schools and graduated from High Point Central High School in 1952.  He worked in route sales for several years for Merita Bakery and Lance.  He then began a 30-year career as a long-distance truck driver, retiring from Roadway Express in 1998.   Until just a few days before his death, he enjoyed telling stories of his driving adventures.  He could recall every road sign and mailbox along many of the routes he frequented in the Northeastern United States.  During a brief retirement, he completed his list of around-the-house projects, and he and his wife Gladys enjoyed traveling to many destinations around the U.S.  He then embarked on another career, spanning 18 years, with Flow Lexus in Winston-Salem.  He enjoyed his many varied duties of delivering vehicles, assisting with service needs, and being an ambassador for Lexus.  He immensely enjoyed the daily interactions with people, for he enjoyed talking to everyone he met, and he never met a stranger!

Clyde was a 60-year Master Mason in Kernersville Masonic Lodge 669 AF & AM, 32⁰ Scottish Rite Mason and served in the NC Order of the Eastern Star, Kernersville Chapter 205.

Clyde is survived by his wife Gladys Green Laster.  They were married September 20, 1953 and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this year.  He is also survived by daughter Beverly Smith (Doug); sons, Randy Laster (Connie) and Jeff Laster (Robin); grandchildren, Jonathan Smith, Meredith Laster (Johnny Carlo), Hillary Laster (fiancé Seth Avrette), Sarah Laster, and great-granddaughter Ava Carlo.

A visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, 3950 Macy Grove Road, Kernersville.  Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Hayworth-Miller, with burial and Masonic Rites to follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 3250 High Point Road, Winston-Salem.

The family would like to thank the staff at Trellis Supportive Care for their support over the past several weeks.  Memorials may be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
