Colonel Coley A. Hunsucker

Colonel Coley A. Hunsucker, son of deceased Coley U. and Clatis R. Hunsucker passed away on March 19, 2026, at Village Care of King. He graduated from King High School in 1952 and soon joined the USAF Aviation Cadet Program and graduated as a distinguished graduate in 1955 as a 2nd LT with his pilot’s wings. He retired from the USAF in 1985 with over 31 years of active duty with the rank of Colonel. Some of his awards include, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and six Air Medals. His master’s degree was from the State University of New York/Plattsburgh. He was a graduate of the National War College. After retirement Col. Hunsucker moved back to his hometown of King, NC. He joined the King American Legion Post 290 in 1985 and was elected the NC American Legion Department Commander in 2002 and then served as ALT Necman for eleven years at the National level. He was a member of the King Planning Board and board adjustments for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wesley L. Hunsucker. Surviving are his devoted wife of 54 years, Barbara Cook Hunsucker of the home, who he often referred to as his “earth angel”, daughters, Jennifer S. Nieland of Austin, TX., Allison H. Smith of Winston-Salem, NC and a special nephew David Hunsucker and his wife Susan who were so helpful when emergencies arrived. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity you so choose. A private services will be held at a later date.
