Mrs. Cynthia (Cindy) Ann McKoy Ellis (57) of Kernersville, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Duke University Hospital. Cynthia was born on February 7, 1959 in Manassas, Virginia to Roy and Patricia McKoy. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Greensboro with a B.A. in Arts Education. She worked at East Forsyth High School as an Art Educator. She was a member of Mt. Holly Baptist Church, Burgaw, NC. Cynthia was a devoted wife to Scott Ellis and mother to Joseph Holmes and Creighton Brown.

Cynthia Ellis was a beloved art teacher who encouraged her students to value their individual uniqueness. She inspired young people to reach deep inside themselves to be their very best in the world we live in. Her sincere generosity extended well beyond family, friends, students, and the art community, as she was profoundly committed to helping those in need and to volunteering for charitable causes in the community. She was an accomplished artist, creating art in many different mediums.

Cynthia's professional accomplishments and positions included; NC Middle School Art Educator of the Year, National Board Certification (1995), Director of Children's' Programs at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center (Salisbury, NC 1987-1993), Multiple Positions - Summer Art Honors Program at the Sawtooth School for Visual Arts, wrote the Middle School curriculum for Forsyth County, awarded the Tony Swider Scholarship to the Penland School of Crafts, Service Project Coordinator (East Forsyth High School) for the ""Empty Bowls"" Fundraiser for the Second Harvest Food Bank, National Scholastics Art Gold key student award.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her father, Roy McKoy. She is survived by her husband, Scott Ellis and sons, Joseph Holmes and Creighton Brown; her mother, Patricia McKoy; her brothers, Esmond McKoy and Braxton McKoy (Leanna); her sisters, Pam Crane (Chris) and Yvonne Velasco (Patrick); nieces, Nicole, Alexis, Natalie, and Jessica; and nephews, Taylor and Braxton, Jr.

A celebration of Cynthia's life will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. There will be an opportunity to visit with the family at 1:00 pm and immediately following the service. There will be an additional celebration of Cynthia's life on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 3:00 pm, with family visitation at 2:00 pm Mt. Holly Baptist Church, 5551 US 1117, Burgaw, NC 27587.
