Danny Wood

Mr. Danny Virgil Wood, 73, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry Co. on July 17, 1944 the son of the late Virgil and Olevia Wood. Danny started his career in law enforcement in 1971. He retired as a Lieutenant with Mount Airy Police Department in 1995 with 24 years of service. Danny acquired numerous nicknames during his career, with one being "W.O.W" which stands for "Wide open Wood". He was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Ararat. After his retirement from the police department, he became a truck driving instructor for Surry Community College. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Mary Jane Wood, Sue Snow and Rachael Lowe Gant. Danny is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Juanita Marshall Wood; his four children, Jeffrey Thornburg (Amy), Brian Thornburg (Carmen), Teresa Potts and Jimmy Wood (Christy); his grandchildren, Tyler Thornburg (Ashley) who was his "Little Buddy", Bradley Potts (Courtney), Brett Potts, Joseph Wood, William Wood, Cayce Potts, Olevia Caudle (Christian), Katie Wood Shoemaker, Kristen Wood and Nicholas Lee Wood; two great-grandchildren and one on the way; and several special nieces and nephews. Danny is also survived by his furry buddy, Tiger. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Ararat with Rev. Lee Johnson and Gray Shelton, MAPD Chaplain officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
