Daryl Glenn Kooy

Daryl Glenn Kooy, 67, passed away to be with the Lord on April 5, 2017. Daryl was born on July 9, 1949 to Vernon Howard Kooy and Margot Anneliese Nebel Kooy in Hackensack, New Jersey. He grew up in Hackensack, New Brunswick, and Flemington, New Jersey. After graduating from Hunterdon Central High School, he was drafted into the Army. He served his country in the Army and as a member of the National Guard for 20 years. Daryl was a simple man who enjoyed woodworking, flying, fishing, golf, and reading western novels. He was a giving man and particularly enjoyed playing Santa at Christmas. He was a great help to his parents in their later years and was always willing to help anyone in need. The last two years of his life were concentrated on battling renal cancer. Throughout this challenging time, he remained positive and not once voiced any complaint. He was very appreciative of the care he received and expressed his gratitude to all who cared for him.
Daryl is survived by his mother, Margot Anneliese Nebel Kooy of Winston-Salem; brothers, Vernon Eugene Kooy and wife, Betty of Hastings, Nebraska, Craig Arthur Kooy of Winston-Salem, Brian Keith Kooy and wife, Kyoko Claire of Roswell, Georgia, and his sister, Gwyn Ellen Kooy of Clemmons. In addition, he is survived by his nieces and nephews and their children: Heidi Marie Kooy and her daughter, Ute, of San Francisco, California, Elizabeth Anne Kooy and husband, Adrian Martin Codel and their sons, Zane, Cael, and Soeren of Dallas, Texas, Jan Frederick Kooy and wife, Nefertiti and their daughter, Athena of San Francisco, Calfornia, Whitney Anneliese Smith and her husband, Nicholas Durrel Hunter and their daughters, Avyn and Johanna of Cypress, Texas, Pieter Coventry Smith of Sherman Oaks, California, Camden Jakob Smith of Jacksonville, Florida, Viktoriya Anne Smith of Libby, Montana, and Micah Christian Smith of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Daryl's family would like to express their gratitude to Drs. Daniel Rukstalis, Shanker Polsani, and the staff of the Cancer Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for their excellent care of Daryl. In addition, we are very appreciative of the care given by the staff of the Palliative Care Center, Winston-Salem, where he spent his final days.
The family is privileged to have had him as a son, brother, and uncle and will miss him tremendously, but are relieved that he is at peace. There will be a private family service at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Lewisville with interment at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, Clemmons.
