Mrs. Dina K. Havelos, of Winston-Salem, on the wings of Angels received her Heavenly Father Monday, April 16, 2019. The birds were chirping their morning songs as the dew was still wet on the newly budded flowers. Dina was a lovely Christian woman built on her faith. She came from Viniani, Greece where she survived World War II. Her parents worked hard to rebuild and plant their village. She took charge of the family meals making sure everyone was fed. That skill carried her through married life with her husband Sam G. Havelos. They settled in Blacksburg, VA. They took helm of the famous Greek Cellar, a landmark across from the Virginia Tech campus. Dina pumped out pizza pies and the best darn lasagna that you have ever tasted. Her husband worked the front of the house. Every night at 11:00 PM sharp she slapped a NY strip into the pizza oven for Sam’s dinner. Dina knew how to feed, how to generously give, and quietly live. During the summer days she lost herself in her vegetable and flower gardens. We would pick and eat raspberries all afternoon, until we were covered head to toe in raspberry color. She never fussed, but simply put us in the bath. The next morning, we woke to freshly baked bread with raspberry jam of course.
Those left behind to honor her include her sister, Rose Kroustalis; brother, Nick Karagiorgis and wife Iris of Palaio Faliro, Greece; many nieces and nephews; Koukla, her daughter-like niece and her sister Angela Legg (Robert), who joined in the fun as well. She had a special Goddaughter, Effie Davis (Chad), who doted on her tirelessly. Her exceptional nephew Chris Berry preceded her in death. He watched over her like a papa bear, made sure she was fed properly every day, and then there were those after hours dinners at the Carriage House where prime rib, her favorite, was always served. Also preceding her in death are her two sisters, Adroniki Surrey (Charlie) and Angela Siafacas (Spyro).
Dina was a natural giver in her faith to the Lord and attended church dutifully. She volunteered for every church event. She mastered the take-out orders during the Spring Greek Festival. Dina loved all the animals. Heronymous and Ramona, her two cats, had the best momma ever. Her best bud, Lily was called upon by Dina for afternoon visits. Lily stayed close to Dina’s feet ready to protect her at any cost. They loved their afternoon naps together. Dina lived her life as a devoted Christian, fantastic chef, lover of nature and all things living. We were so honored to live in the shadow of her grace.
A funeral service will be conducted 12:30 PM Friday, April 19, 2019, at Annuniciation Greek Orthodox Church, officiated by Father Constantine Shepher. The Trisagion service will be held at 12:00 PM with visitation beginning at 11:30 AM at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the funeral service at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to donate in Dina’s name, please consider the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, Trellis Supportive Care, who brought back peace into her life, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or the Forsyth Humane Society, 4881 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
