Mr. Donald Max Dwiggins, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 14, 2018, at his home is Advance surrounded by his family. Don was born on March 29, 1942, in Winston-Salem to John Max and Inez Mathis Dwiggins. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1960 and later High Point College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After graduating from High Point, Don remained active in the High Point College Alumni Association even serving as President of the association. After college, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After basic training, he completed Advanced Individual Training at Fort Lee, Virginia, where he was an Honor Graduate of Quartermaster School. Don was assigned to the 30th Brigade, 230th Supply and Transportation Battalion in Winston-Salem. Don was honorably discharged in 1971 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Don worked for the City of Winston-Salem as Community Service Supervisor and retired after thirty years in 1999. During this time, he also worked part time with his father at J. Max Dwiggins Real Estate starting in 1967. Don continued in real estate for 51 years becoming a member of the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors and later received the designation “Realtor Emeritus”. Don was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church where he sang in the Adult Choir and the Voices In Praise (VIP) Choir and served as a past Deacon. He loved participating in the Easter and Christmas musicals and the choirs VIP mission trips. He was an active member of Mark and Amy Sink’s Sunday School class. He also served on the Calvary Baptist Day School Board for a number of years. He was a former member of Ardmore United Methodist Church and Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church where he was very active in church activities. Don was an active member of the Gideons since 1984. He took pleasure in distributing Bibles at Forsyth Tech, the Dixie Classic Fair, and hospitals each year. Don had been a member of the Winston-Salem Jaycees and was involved with Senior Services in the Meals on Wheels program. He also enjoyed spending time with his Biscuitville friends and K&W lunch friends as often as he could. Don was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching his favorite teams High Point and Wake Forest play. He especially loved to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events to cheer for them. Don will be remembered by all for his amazing smile, caring spirit, and contagious laugh that he shared with everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Norma Dwiggins Hoover. Surviving family includes his loving wife of 47 years, Audrey Squires Dwiggins; his two children: Kelli Burns (George) and Max Dwiggins; four grandchildren: Wills and Miles Burns and Madison and MaKenna Dwiggins; two aunts: Lucille Mathis Manuel and Marie Squires Dwiggins; three nephews; Jeff Hoover, Chad Squires and Shane Wyke; sisters-in-law: Barbara Squires and Rosalind Campbell (Glenn); mother-in-law Ethel Mae Squires; and many extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 2:30 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, 134 S. Peace Haven Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 with Dr. Gary Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will immediately follow the service at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Gideons International, PO Box 25263, Winston-Salem, NC 27114-5263; Senior Services, Inc., Attn. Finance, 2895 Shorefair Dr. NW, Winston-Salem, NC 27105; or Calvary Baptist Day School’s Nathan Clark Scholarship Fund, 134 S. Peace Haven Rd. Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is assisting the Dwiggins Family.
