Mr. Donald Gray Shields, age 74, of Kernersville entered the more immediate presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday morning, December 21, 2016. He was born on October 22, 1942, the son and only child of Wyatte Victor Shields and Ruby Mae Leonard Shields, both preceding him in death. He lived all of his life in the Union Cross community. He was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church. Don played the trumpet for 60 plus years as a member of the Church band, and at times served as a Board member, chief usher, diener, and scoutmaster. He served as a Board member with several terms as chairman at Union Cross Volunteer Fire Department, and enjoyed helping at the fire department barbecue fundraisers. Don served in the US Army Reserve from 1964 to 1970. He was a proud graduate of Robert B. Glenn High School in 1961 and of Forsyth Technical Community College in 2001, and joked that it took him 40 years to complete his education! Don retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 35 years of service.

Don is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Weavil Shields; his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Les Hardy; brother-in-law, Steve Weavil and wife Vicky; brother-in-law Robert Weavil and Joan; aunts Bobbie Scott and Sadie Craven; and numerous cousins.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 PM, Friday, December 23, 2016, at Union Cross Moravian Church with Pastor Russell Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, Dec 22, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to Union Cross Moravian Church, 4295 High Point Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107, Union Cross Fire Department, 4401 High Point Road, Kernersville, NC 27284, or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
