Doris Cooke Jessup

Mrs. Doris Cooke Jessup, 91, was reunited with her beloved husband, Porter G. Jessup, on February 24, 2015. She was born in Surry Co. on February 20, 1924 the daughter of the late William McKinley Cooke and Annie Arrington Cooke. Doris was a faithful member of Woodville Baptist Church for 74 years, joining on July 22, 1941. She was a hard worker who spent many years working in tobacco in the fields behind her home, while Porter ran Jessup's Mill on the Dan River. Doris was also retired from J.P. Stevens. Her love was felt by everyone that met her, especially her nieces and nephews that she cared for immensely. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved sister; Louise George, her brothers; Harold, Ray, Ezra, Hersey, Bill and Richard Cooke and her best friend and cousin; Madge Inman Tucker.

Doris is survived by a brother; George Dewel Cooke of Mt. Airy and her sisters-in-law; Shelby Cooke, Louise Cooke, Dorothy Mills and Clidie Rogers all of Westfield and Marian Cooke of SC.

Funeral services for Doris will be conducted 12:00 noon Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Woodville Baptist Church with Pastor Keith Love and Rev. Cynthia Cooke Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to: Woodville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Zelda Collins, 5108 Westfield Rd., Mt. Airy, NC 27030 or Francisco Rescue Squad, 7100 NC Hwy 89 West, Westfield, NC 27053. Many thanks to all the faithful and loving caregivers she has had over the past 10 years that made it possible for her to stay in her home of 74 years to her final days. The family also appreciates the care and love shown by Betsy from Gentiva Home Health and Mountain Valley Hospice.
